Numerical Precision in Volume Rendering
Much research has been done in volume rendering, however little of this involves how the precision affects the final rendered image. It is not until we know how the system behaves, that we can start to change its underlying components.
Objectives of the project
We intend to use a variable precision framework, to analyze what effects the different stages of the pipeline have. This will allow us to gain insight into what really happens when approximating the volume rendering equations. Using this knowledge, we will be able to predict the system and therefore make modifications to it prior to execution. These modifications could mean that the rendering is performed faster and/or more accurately. Both the speed and accuracy is of great importance for medical visualization which requires interactive and correct results.
